Chairman's message

What a year, possibly the most traumatic HEiB year in the 20 years of my involvement with the recent loss of our President Les Goodman.

Les was a stalwart, my mentor and friend.  His phrase "Britain in Bloom is the largest and finest community participation competition in the country" will stay with me forever, not so his poems, you may or may not be glad to hear!

Last year some of you were effected by a certain lack of professionalism on our part, you know who you are and I would like to personally apologise. To the others, everything went swimmingly!

Thanking my fellow judges and assessors is a given, but this year I thank them all for the extra efforts they have made. It would be remiss of me though not to give a special mention to Mark Wiltshire.  Mark was the Vice Chair and latterly has taken on any and every role possible.  Administratively and financially we have never been in better shape.

Back to the usual format then, the weather! The cold spring start did not seem to affect the magnificent displays we have seen yet again.  The warm, dry July made judging a pleasure - except that is when Carole and I judged Dunchurch on Sea!

The weather didn't put any of you off in the spring, as this year we had 47 entries for the 'in Bloom' campaign and 160 'It's Your Neighbourhood'  that were assessed, along with schools and the hospitality sector, its possibly been one of our busiest years!

HEiB continues to be one of the most successful of the 17 regions throughout the country, and we wish every success to out 2019 finalists. They have been judged but neither they, nor I, know the results yet!

GOOD LUCK

Norton in Hales, Winshill, Newport, Biddulph and Rugby

and a huge thank you to all of you for taking part this year from all at Heart of England in Bloom

Roger Bache
